Suffering From Your Pet’s Smelly Breath?

Monday, 30 April, 2012 By: maxine

Fret not, we have an easy and painless solution for you and your pet! No need to struggle with the fingerbrush and toothpaste any longer to remove those unsightly plaque and tartar!

Not a new product here at The Water Dish, but a very effective one, we must say. ProDen PlaqueOff works by ingesting its nutrients into the bloodstream, then emerging in the saliva, helping to soften and loosen tartar on teeth. Here’s a real life example of a 14-year-old dog who tried ProDen PlaqueOff:

Use ProDen PlaqueOff for 3 – 8 weeks daily by sprinkling the powder on your pet’s food. When the ingredients are absorbed into the blood via the digestion and enters the saliva, they effectively prevent accumulation of plaque by affecting the ability of plaque to ‘stick’ to surfaces in the mouth. Existing tartar becomes porous, looses by itself or can be easily removed by brushing or cleaning. We all know daily brushing can be quite a chore!

The active element in PlaqueOff® Animal is a specially selected seaweed,  Ascophyllum nodosum, harvested from the clean and cold seas of Norway and Iceland. A 100% all natural product, ProDen PlaqueOff® Animal  is free from artificial colours and preservatives and contains no gluten or sugar.

Have a fussy, stubborn cat who refuses to have his teeth brushed? ProDen PlaqueOff for Cats is the solution! Works in exactly the same way as its dog counterpart but with the addition of Brewer’s Yeast, to increase palatability for fussy cats. ProDen PlaqueOff for Cats also prevents gingivitis with daily use.

Now your dog and cat will no longer have unsightly teeth and smelly breath.

The Water Dish is giving away 150 samples of Proden PlaqueOff for Animals at our June event with Taboo Club. To receive an invitation or to win prizes, do send in a photo of you and your pet to Taboo’s Facebook Page.

Eight Months Old And Left To Die

Monday, 9 April, 2012 By: admin

Written by Edric Cheong, Intern

He was only eight months old when he was abandoned, leashed to a lamp post, left to fend for himself, without food or water. During the day, people would walk past him without noticing or even stopping to help. Children would poke at him, call him names, and even throw stones at him. But it wasn’t as bad compared to what he had to face when night fell. In the wee hours of the morning, he was target practice for baseball, stones as big as a fist were in place of balls and hurled at full speed peppering his tiny body; wooden planks became bats striking his frail body at every angle. Chained to the lamp post and defenceless against the beatings, all he could do was to cower in his little corner and yelp in pain.

Ignored in the day and tortured at night, this went on for almost two weeks. Bleeding, battered and bruised, nobody called for help; all they did was to stop and stare. When he was about to give in to the incessant torture, excessive dehydration and starvation, his leash was broken by a pair of human hands. Trembling and shivering, he looked up, afraid but unable to defend himself, he saw a stranger picking him up. Before he could focus, his eyes shut.

His name is Cooper

His name is Cooper, a mix between a Doberman Pinscher and Daschund. Just six months ago he was abandoned and abused by strangers in Bishan Park; he now lives the life he deserves.

Vernon Koh was looking for a dog that could give Junior (another dog he rescued a few years earlier), companionship. He told his pet groomer to keep a look out and let him know if there are dogs that fit the criteria. It wasn’t long before he received a call from his pet groomer, informing him that there was an abandoned dog that was in a similar state that Junior was found in – abused. “Cooper was in an extremely bad state. You could see Cooper’s ribcage protruding and you didn’t need to squint to see the sores covering his entire body. The stones thrown at him and wooden planks used to whack him left concaved marks the shape of the stones and planks. I’ve seen numerous abuses, Cooper’s was the worse,” said Vernon.

“There are so many pet owners that come to Bishan Park, how can they not see this? If you don’t want to get your hands dirty at least call the police or SPCA!” This was Vernon’s reaction when he found out Cooper was abused for two whole weeks.

A rising trend

Animal cruelty in Singapore is on the rise. There is a significant increase in animal cruelty which includes abandonment, abuse and neglect. As The Straits Times reported, there were cases where cats were dumped in garbage bins, dogs being thrown out from flats and even trapped in cars under the scorching sun.

Corresponding with the increase in news reports of animal cruelty, the SPCA revealed that there was a 10 percent rise in the number of animal cruelty cases received which stands at 1,027 cases last year. Of the 1,027 cases received, 70 per cent were cases involved neglected pets. These are only numbers that have been reported to the SPCA and media, what about the cases that are not reported? SPCA executive director Corrine Fong noted that the rise in the number of cases could be due largely to more people buying exotic pets, which is due to rising affluence but increase in the number of reported cases indicates greater awareness of animal cruelty. To counter this issue, the SPCA proposed to increase the penalties and as a preventive measure, ban people under the age of 16 from buying or adopting animals in addition to informing people about what constitutes animal cruelty.

In relation to this Vernon nods in agreement and adds, “People need to know that animals feel pain just like humans. Getting an abused animal back on their feet is a traumatic experience for both the animal and the rescuer.”

Getting Cooper back on his feet

Imagine having to care for a child that knows nothing and fears everything. Nursing Cooper wasn’t easy.  “The first time Cooper was brought back home, he would bark at literally everything, drifting plastic bags, the sound of the fan, static of the television and any sudden movement,” Vernon recounts the first time. And it didn’t help that Cooper had to be toilet trained, get accustomed to the new environment and people – the very same beings that beat and tortured him for fun.

It took six months for Cooper to settle in the new environment but he has never gotten used to strangers; defence and aggression is all he knows. “He is very protective of the people around him especially those who showers him with love.  He sees anyone entering the house or even within the vicinity of the house as a threat. I remember when Cooper took a big bite out of my friend on two occasions.”

Cooper doesn’t go for walks like normal dogs do, not because he doesn’t want to but because he can’t.  Cooper bolts for a place to hide whenever he spots a leash and when he is at the void deck he trembles and shivers violently, jumping at every sound he hears. He tries to make it inside the lift at every chance he gets, because he knows that’s when he is the safest. Vernon explains, “The abuse at Bishan Park has left Cooper with absolute distrust of people and he’s just afraid of everything and everyone. In order to help with his recovery and mental state I’ve stopped bringing him down for walks.”

Cooper protecting his saviour and friend

It’s been a year since the abuse and is making good progress towards recovery but the abuse has never left him. It is deeply etched in his memory, and Cooper is scarred for life.

Why Does My Kitten Hide Away From Me?

Tuesday, 27 March, 2012 By: maxine

Kittens are such cute furballs and are often active and playful. You may have just adopted a kitten from one of our local shelters or from our adopted charity, Love Kuching Project by The Water Dish. Usually, kittens adopted from our charity have been socialised and are fully ready to move into their new homes.

However, it is quite normal for a kitten to hide away while it gets used to a new home. Kittens find this process easier if they have one of their siblings with them, which is why many people choose to adopt two cats from a litter rather than just one. Of course, this will only be if your home situation permits. Two kittens can be quite a handful and in the kittens’ best interests, it is only fair to adopt one if you can only cope with one.

Recently, The Water Dish’s family home has been turned into a temporary foster home for a litter of four kittens who were rescued from a construction site – as well as for a Persian mix grey cat who was found abandoned in the vicinity. Two of the kittens and the Persian have gone to great homes.

The first to be adopted was sweet, gentle, pretty Coco, short for Calico. A very good-natured lap kitty, she went home with Shiqi, a first time cat owner.

Shortly after, Coco’s sister, Hey Hey, was adopted by Yogi and family. Hey Hey is a super manja kitty who loves cuddles and pets, but is very playful, almost like a tomboy.

Smokey has also been adopted by Sharon and husband. They already have a four-year-old cat living with them so taking care of Smokey should be no problems for the couple. Smokey was found on the verge of starvation, extremely skinny. She had very deep collar markings around her neck which suggest abandonment or a runaway cat. But she has definitely had the luxuries of a home, despite her thinning fur and weak body when she was found. After a few weeks with us, her fur has grown  quite well and she has a massive appetite.

The two remaining kitties we have left with us are Cowboy, the black and white one in the top left corner, and Tabby, the tabby one in the picture next to Cowboy.

Tabby is fully ready to be adopted – he is socialised with humans and no longer hisses at us. However, the same cannot be said for Cowboy. Despite being with us for a few weeks, he is still hissy and scared of humans. In the entire litter, Cowboy was the slowest to learn how to play. He was always in the shadow of his more playful siblings, while they were playing, he would be sleeping. And he slept most of the time. We think he could be the runt of the litter, or just a slow learner.

Whilst Tabby has many a potential adopter, we are not putting him up for adoption just yet because he is the sole companion for Cowboy now. We think that Cowboy should learn from Tabby how to play with humans and that we are not a threat. He should learn how to stop hiding from us so that he can finally be adopted to people who will love and cherish him for life.

While it will take time for Cowboy to gain confidence in humans, here are some ways that will help him (and your kitten who hides from you):

  • Confine kitty to one small room at first, where it has its litter box, food, water and toys. This makes new territory a manageable size.
  • Spend plenty of time in the room with kitty, but don’t engage with it. Cats are most comfortable when being ignored. Once it understands you are not trying to grab it, it will relax in your presence.
  • Avoid staring at kitty – it will perceive this as a threat.
  • Talk softly and quietly whenever you feed her so that she gets used to your voice.
  • Keep play sessions short.
  • Try petting kitty from time to time so that it gets used to human touch.
  • Slowly increase the amount of time you spend in the room with kitty.
  • I’ve also tried playing with Tabby in front of Cowboy, so that Cowboy sees that we are not going to harm its sibling and may slowly initiate play with humans gradually.
Socialising a kitten certainly takes time. Some kittens need more time, others less. Most importantly, the kitten needs to feel secure in its environment with you for it to be able to feel close to you, so that you in turn, can lavish all your love and care upon the little life, forever.

Why Adopt?

-Written by Edric Cheong, Intern at The Water Dish

I’ve always wanted to have a dog since a tender age of ten but sadly my mother disapproves of it. She thought that she’d end up taking the responsibility of caring for the dog, since I could not even take proper care of myself (but I was ten! that is a factor that shouldn’t even be considered). All I could do was to stare at kids with dogs longingly, consoling myself that I could be that kid one day. I thought of names for my ‘future pet’, unique names like Destroyer, Carnage, Ugly and even Vodka. Even though I was once chased by a one-year-old Maltese, the shame and trauma to have a tiny little barking creature chase me around my block has not deterred me.

If you are considering getting a pet because it is for good luck, because the puppy in the window looks so darn cute (all puppies/kittens/babies are cute, but they almost never stay like that), all your friends and relatives have one or you think that it will help you get popular with the opposite sex, then you are not ready and at risk of dumping or abandoning your pet. There is a lot more to it than just superficial satisfaction a pet brings you. Here’s a short list of what entails when getting a pet: dedication, attention, responsibility, patience, and a whole lot of time, effort and love (not forgetting money).

With the above said; if you do intend to get a pet, choose to adopt instead of buying one.

By adopting:

• You save a life
-Homes and shelters receive large numbers of abandoned and unwanted pets (SPCA alone accounts for about 8400 a year). This large numbers of abandoned and un-adopted pets coupled with the low demand of adoption results in space, food, medical and money constraints that the only way to cope with these issues are that un-adopted pets to be put to sleep.

• You minimize the culling of stray cats and dogs, as well as stop people from buying pets on impulse and abandoning them – minimizing strays and overcrowding condition in homes and shelter, not forgetting saving them from being put to sleep.

• You stop the support of puppy mills and pet stores when you adopt
-As most puppy mills and pet stores are guilty of unethical and cruel treatment of animals not to mention the inhabitable conditions they are being housed in.

Other advantages of adopting:

• Contrary to popular believe, pets from animal shelters are healthy and cared for; proper treatment and love are given, so you can expect a healthy pet in an environment that is supports their growth and mental state.

• It is a myth that pets put up for adoption are abused
-largely because of impulse buying and abandoning them.

• Information about animals put up for adoption is readily available. If you are worried about not knowing anything about the animals put up for adoption from homes/shelters, don’t fret. The staff caring for them will be able to provide you with first hand information regarding your queries.

• You will be able to find a pet that suits you, keeping in mind that every individual pet has their own distinct personality. Staffs and volunteers from homes and shelters will help in finding a pet that is of the right fit.

• You save money
*Prices are taken from SPCA’s website (non-profit) these are to cover medical expenses, sterilization, micro-chipping and licensing
Female dog $155
Male dog $145
Female cat $65
Male cat $50
Local rabbit $10
pure breed rabbits $50
Small mammals (hamsters, guinea pigs) $10 (microchip not incl.)

• You save time and effort because pets that are put up for adoption may already be toilet and obedience trained.
There are numerous reasons why one should adopt instead of buy these are just the top few compelling reasons.

Share on Facebook or retweet. Inform your friends and families, people who are contemplating of buying a pet, let them know that adopting is always a better option. Help support the cause to adopt instead of buy. Save them from being put to sleep, you know they deserve better.

Fancy A Lil’ CocoTherapy?

Tuesday, 22 November, 2011 By: maxine

Coconut products have been all the rave in the United States for a long time now, because it boasts of numerous health benefits that is purely natural, without additional harsh chemicals. Coconut oil is made up of medium chained fatty acids that is found in mother’s breast milk. They are known for their ability to kill off bacteria and viruses. It is an edible fatty acid (duh) and is non-toxic to us or our pets.

Feeding coconut-related products to our pets could be the best thing you could ever give your pet, and pet owners in the States swear by certain coconut treats and products that have helped their pet regain joint mobility, drastic improvements in their skin and coat, curbing obesity and best of all, coconut is so natural and palatable that pets love the taste of it.

When fed regularly to pets, coconut has proven benefits:

  • Clears up skin conditions such as eczema, flea allergies, dermatitis and itchy skin
  • Makes coat sleek and glossy
  • Deodorizes doggy odour
  • Reduces bad breath
  • Regulate and balances insulin and thyroid levels
  • Helps with arthritis or ligament problems
  • Speeds healing of cuts, wounds, hot spots and insect bites and stings when applied topically

How could we resist such an awesome product? The newest range to hit The Water Dish store is CocoTherapy®, a range of coconut products including virgin coconut oil and organic coconut chips.

CocoTherapy Organic Virgin Coconut Oil is made from the purest, fresh organically grown coconuts. The coconuts are grown in a USDA certified organic coconut farm. It is guaranteed human-grade, 100% pure and natural:

  •  non-GMO (genetically modified organism)
  •  cold pressed
  •  hexane-free
  •  unrefined
  •  non-bleached
  •  NO trans fat
  •  NO hydrogenated fat

The coconut oil also comes in a glass jar that stores the oil better than plastic containers, and can be recycled to keep other treats or knick knacks for your pet! We were also very impressed with the cold-press technique used to extract the oil from the coconut. The coconuts are harvested fresh and are opened between four to eight hours of harvesting. The fresh coconut meat is then air-dried in a cold dry environment, and cold-pressed to express the healthy and pure coconut milk. The oil is separated from moisture in a process called vacuum drying, with low processing temperatures that are approximately 100 degrees F.

CocoTherapy® uses the cold-press method of extraction, which makes use of a precise set of low temperatures and pressures. This process produces a coconut oil extract in its purest type; pure antioxidant rich oils that give excellent nourishing and health benefits.

When the coconut oil is exposed to high temperatures, chemical reactions within the oil also speed up. These chemical reactions multiply every 18 degrees the temperature is increased. So basically, as the oil’s temperature increases , the quicker its antioxidant qualities are broken down by, oxygen, light, and air from the “pressing” process.

When the “high heat” processed method is utilized it yields a higher amount -more coconut oil –  and it is processed at a much faster pace. So almost all commercial manufacturers sacrifice the Coconut Oil’s organic and nourishing characteristics to save several extra dollars. A truly Virgin Organic Coconut Oil  Product Line such as CocoTherapy would never sacrifice the quality of its products by using over-processed Coconut Oil. When looking for coconut-related products for your pet or even for yourself, remember to look for cold-pressed products, as they will give you the health benefits desired.

Usually, coconut oil that is considered “excellent” has a 0.4% – 0.11% moisture content. Higher moisture content not only lessens the oil’s shelf life, but also makes the oils more susceptible to oxidation, bacteria, and the breakdown of triglycerides. CocoTherapy coconut oil has a moisture content of only 0.2%.

Their process enables the enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and nutritional benefits to be preserved, resulting in a raw coconut meat and oil that tastes fresh, has wonderful texture and smell, and contains all the health benefits of fresh raw coconuts.

The best part of CocoTherapy’s Organic Virgin Coconut Oil, although cold-pressed, is that is remains competitively priced at $24.20 for a 236ml jar on The Water Dish. And you can share this wonderful product with your pet as it is safe for human consumption!

CocoTherapy’s Organic Coconut Chips have been tried and tested by our cat and dog mascots at The Water Dish. At first, we were skeptical as we had never fed coconut products to them and thought they wouldn’t like the flavour. To our surprise, the cats (who are less greedy than the dogs) gobbled up the chips immediately and started begging for more!

A delicious treat for your dog or cat, CocoTherapy Coconut Chips are made from dehydrated organic coconut meat.

The dried coconut flakes are made of pure, 100% organic coconut meat, with absolutely NO sugars, salt, preservatives, or chemicals added. CocoTherapy Coconut Chips are an excellent source of dietary fiber and provide the same benefits as coconut oil. All our pets absolutely love the rich, slightly nutty taste of the treats.

As a fiber supplement, feed 1 tablespoon per 10lbs of body weight, 1 – 2 times daily on food. Give a few treats throughout the day too! Coconut chips can also be fed to hamsters and rabbits.

CocoTherapy Organic Coconut Chips retail at $12.50 for a 85g resealable foil pack on The Water Dish.

Holistic Select was part of Eagle Pack but has now been rebranded. At Holistic Select, their food recipes start with quality proteins, fats & carbohydrates and offer a complete digestive support system, to encourage a healthy gut and total well-being for your pet.

Ingredients in Holistic Select foods contain:

  • Probiotics:

Probiotics are the “good bacteria” essential for a healthy digestive system and a healthy immune system too. They help to improve digestibility of ingredients and are an essential part of the immune system.

By feeding a diet with live probiotics on the food (they are applied to Holistic Select kibble after it has been cooked and cooled, to assure maximum survival) you are re-inoculating the digestive tract with these healthy organisms every day to assure ideal levels in the gut.

  • Prebiotics:

The fiber sources used in all dry Holistic Select recipes are also known as prebiotics, which serve as the essential nutrition for the health and performance of the “good bacteria” in the digestive tract.

  • Digestive Enzymes:

The body’s organs (mainly the pancreas) produce Digestive enzymes to digest (break down) the food so the intestinal tract can absorb the nutrients, which are then distributed throughout the body. They are added to the diet to increase digestibility and to reduce the stress on the organs of the body. Because the digestive enzymes are included at guaranteed levels, you can feel confident they are bringing home the same high levels of digestive support in every bag.

  • Phytonutrients

Phytonutrients are elements found in the skins of vegetables and fruits that act as powerful antioxidants. They are known to help neutralize free radicals in order to keep the cells of the body healthy. They are natural ingredients that enhance the immune system and help protect the body.

And of course, their new look!

Pet Grooming – What You Need To Know

Wednesday, 5 October, 2011 By: maxine
Grooming is more than just a beauty session for your pet. Your pet’s personal groomer can play an intricate part in their health and well being and they can provide you, the owner, with a field of valuable information in regard to regular grooming & maintenance. Along with your veterinarian, a groomer can be very helpful in discovering existing health and skin problems, and may be able to work with you in resolving some of them.

Your groomer is vital to your pet’s happiness and health. Where your pet may see their vet once or twice a year for check ups, your groomer is there every few weeks giving them a full once over. Groomers are responsible for so much more than a bath and hair cut. They maintain ear, teeth, nail and skin health; frequently checking for any new abnormalities such as suspicious lumps and keeping an eye on existing issues.

Regular grooming, along with everything else is a ’training process’. Whether it is a puppy with a lifetime of new experiences ahead, or a well loved older cat in need of a little TLC. The first basic rule of thumb is to start early. A puppy can have its first grooming around 3 months of age, then another full grooming around 6 months. It’s a good idea to get them used to the routine of brushing, nail trims and teeth cleaning – this will hopefully make everything so much easier as they get older. Although cats require different grooming needs than their canine counterparts, routine brushing is beneficial.

Decide what add on services you want while making your appointment, this way the groomer can schedule ample time for your pets’ pampering. At The Water Dish, we offer Basic and Full Grooming Packages, as well as spa services such as Mud Spas and Medicated Spas.

Be honest about your pet’s condition and temperament. If they are matted, have fleas or are excessively dirty, you should expect to pay a little extra being that remedying these issues will take extra time. If your pet has aggression or anxiety issues, be honest.
If you would prefer grooming your dog/cat yourself, to enhance the bond between you and  him, here are some tips you can follow:

Nails – Don’t be afraid to play around a bit with your dog’s feet; this will help it get used to the feeling of someone holding their foot in order to do a nail trim. It is a good idea if you are apprehensive about cutting nails yourself, to take your pet into your groomer or veterinarian to learn how to do it properly. If you do try it at home, make sure you have a good pair of nail clippers and styptic power handy, just in case you cut into the quick and it starts to bleed. One good brand to try out would be Bio-Groom Sure Clot.

Ears – They should be checked on a regular basis. (Cats need clean ears too). If the ears are especially bad, and there is a lot of hair that has built up inside the ear, this needs to be removed. We provide Ear Cleaning services as well, but for the times in between grooming sessions, you may wish to clean your pets’ ears yourself.

Ear powder helps to dry the ear out and control the odor. You could try PPP Groomer’s Ear Power or Cardinal Ear Powder.
Then, put a couple of drops of the ear wash (PPP Ear Wash with Tea Tree Oil) into the ear canal and massage gently to bring up all the wax build-up, dirt, etc. that has accumulated in the ear. It is important not to use a cotton bud if you don’t know what you are doing; you can damage the ear if you go too far in. Use a cotton ball, or soft cloth. Wipe out the inside of the ear, and you can finish up with using a good quality ear cleaner,  such as Virbac’s Ear & Skin Cleanser, or Chitocure’s Ear Cleaner, which contains anti-fungal properties. Of course, if your pet has a case of ear mites, it would be better to treat the ears with ear mite treatment (Bio-Groom Ear Mite Treatment/ Sentry Earmiticide for Cats), to prevent and kill mites.

Bathing at home – Make sure you use a dog/cat shampoo, not a human shampoo. Our skin and a pet’s skin have a different PH level, and our shampoo can cause skin problems in your pet. Make sure not to get water inside the ear; the build-up of water can cause ear infections.

Anal Glands – Larger dogs have less of a problem expressing these glands on their own during a bowel movement. Smaller dogs seem to have more of a difficult time, in some cases.  Anal glands need to be expressed. These little glands can be a concern. If they are a constant problem, and develop frequent infections, sometimes there is no choice but to have them surgically removed for the health and comfort of your pet, but this is only in severe cases. We provide anal gland expression at $14, do enquire within for services.

Brushing is mandatory! – Introduce your dog to a soft brush, and pick a time to do it. Make it part of your daily routine. Many dogs can manipulate this brushing session to the point where they win the battle. Owners give up when their pet nibbles, fusses or scratches, saying “he/she doesn’t like it”. But, when they go see their groomer, they have to go through the process; it’s the groomers job to make sure that the grooming gets done. It is very helpful to a groomer that the animal they are working on is co-operative (which isn’t always the case!). This can start at home; a lot of patience, re-assurance and a firm voice goes a long way. Remember, you are the boss, not your pet during this time.

The First Haircut – If you have a dog for the first time, and aren’t quite sure of the style that it is suppose to have, don’t worry. Just because you have a Bichon (which by grooming standards should have a full scissor cut), or even a Cocker Spaniel with a full-length Cocker Clip, in the end, its up to you.
Your groomer is always there to make helpful suggestions on how they ‘see’ your dog’s style. You may have an idea of how you want your dog to look and it is ultimately up to the owner to let the groomer know what they want. Don’t let your groomer tell you that your dog should look a certain way because of its breed, it’s your decision in the end.

Groomers can certainly inform you how this particular breed should look and what they require, but not all dogs do well with grooming. They may have skin conditions, or matt up to the extreme that an owner is incapable of de-matting them, their hair just may not be consistent with the way that it should be. A lot of factors can come into play. But, groomers can be very knowledgeable and can help to achieve that special look you want. Unless your dog is a ‘show dog’, then it is required to be groomed according to the breeds’ standard book. Otherwise, your pet is a very important part of your family, and you just want them to look well taken care of and be loved. Each breed requires different grooming needs, some more frequent than others.

The groomer is the best person to let you know how often your pet needs to come in. Some dogs that have long full coats, may need to come in as often as once a month. Whereas, as dog that has a basic shavedown or bath & tidy up, can go much longer than that. You still need to keep up on the nail trims & ear cleaning on a regular basis in between groomings.

Teeth brushing is an important part of health care, especially in smaller dogs. There are a few ways to get your dog/cat familiarized with teeth brushing. Purchase a rubber tipped messaging brush that fits on your finger tip such as the CET Fingerbrush Kit (comes with sample toothpaste!) and just rub this inside their mouths to get them use to the feel of it.

After a couple of weeks or so, purchase toothpaste. They have a variety of flavours to entice your animal to enjoy this whole experience. After they have gotten use to this, you can try using a regular pet’s toothbrush.

Purchase doggie treats that help lessen the tartar build-up and something that makes them want to chew. For example, Nylabones & Greenies products are good, try to stay away from the rawhides, because they are not easily digestible in the stomach, and can cause a build-up inside the intestines & stomach. Of course, dental visits with your veterinarian are a must.

Our pets need a lot of love & care. Cats and dogs cannot look after themselves alone; they need their ‘human family’ for all of their needs. They can’t always tell us when something is bothering them, or if they are in discomfort. At least with a regular grooming regimen, skin problems, fleas, lumps & warts, or any other kinds of skin conditions, can be discovered just by a routine visit to your groomer. Your groomer can be your first link to discovering some skin problems, and can suggest, along with your vet, proper shampoos that can help turn the problem around. Mascots Play Dress Up!

Tuesday, 21 June, 2011 By: maxine

After this photoshoot, I hereby declare The Water Dish mascots VAIN. Especially the females – Truffle, the brain-damaged Siamese mix and Lady Pei Pei, a 15-year-old Papillion.

I wanted to try on some of the clothes and accessories from Fluffy’s Choice that we would be selling at the Paws N Friend’s event this Sunday, the 26th of June.  Which, if you don’t already know, is from 1 – 6pm at Bishan Active Park (on Bishan Street 23). Love Kuching Project, their foster kitties and ourselves will be there, and we will be giving away FREE Bosch and Sanabelle food, selling treats like JerHigh, Bow Wow and Greedy Dog at insane prices, and of course, debuting Fluffy’s Choice clothes, bags and accessories for our store at this event.

I decided to doll the mascots up – after all, what are mascots for if not to vouch for the products tried and tested?

Lady Peipei and Cracker got ‘married’. My personal favourite is the tuxedo, because I’ve always envisioned Junior Major, the chihuahua, at my wedding in a tuxedo (not that I’m about to wed  anytime soon at all). Been searching in vain for doggy tuxedos to no avail. Fluffy’s Choice tuxedos are custom made and only come in selected sizes.

We have them in blue, red, black and white. It retails at $49 for all colours. There are also quite a few bridal gowns for sale, but we will only have one piece for every design at the event. Very limited, and once out of stock, we would have to start taking in orders and have them delivered to you instead.

Then we have here darling Junior Major in a Mexican outfit, the highlight of which is the Mexican hat!

Great for Halloween, if you don’t fancy Frankenstein dogs. Junior is also donning cloth booties, in black (with blue tongues). These booties are easier to wear than the hard kind with laces, because they drop easily when dogs walk. Tried and tested, and gave up on booties for dogs. But these cloth booties meld well with their paws and are fastened with velcro strips around their ankles.

Comes in a pack of four in red, blue, khaki and black, at $18.90 per set.

I like also this sailor outfit, especially the sailor hat!

It looks super cute and fits dogs with floppy ears or straight-up ears. The elastic bands are looped around the ears and double fastened under the chin with an adjustable velcro strip.

Best part is it is only $13 – and your furry friend turns into cute sailor! Cracker, the sailor model, is a very stoned model and just sits there and lets us snap away at him with our cameras. He also looks extremely bored. Which is good for us, because it is so difficult to get animals to sit and stay, not to mention pose, for photos. In clothes.

Then we have the Go-To-School look, and our model is Junior, who is 9 this year but looks like he’s only 4, with his youthful face and playful nature.

He has on a cap one size too large for his head and somehow managed to almost shake it off his head.

The backpack can be used to put lightweight stuff like his treats, tissue paper and doggy poo bags for his walks.

We have quite a variety of sizes for the caps and it suits large dogs quite well. There are also other colours – red and blue; and other designs like brown camouflage and green camouflage for that rugged look.

The backpack also comes in denim and dark blue, for $15 each.

Here at The Water Dish, we don’t believe cats can’t do what dogs can, and that includes strutting around in clothes. Here’s one vain example, Truffle, in a silky Oriental cheongsam.

Do pardon her look, she tends to look stoned most of the time to people who don’t know her well because she is partially brain-damaged. But she is a true lap cat with quite a fiesty temper at times.

We have a few varieties of Oriental dresses and shirts, and only one of each. The pretty one above is retailing at $26.

Junior’s After School look is the Looking-Tired-After-Playing-Soccer look.

The soccer jersey is oversized for him, but I was just trying it on for fun because I didn’t want to  take out all the jerseys from their plastic wrappings for size. There are England, France, Argentina and Italy jerseys, all for $24 each.

Here is Cadbury, resident temperamental cat, donning a tribal outfit two sizes too small for him!

He’s also looking up at Junior, who is wearing a netted black ‘bad boy’ vest thing, complete with metal chains and studded pockets.

Junior does not particularly like cats, because they jump out at him unexpectedly and he ends up snapping at most of them, except for one or two of his favourite cat buddies. Unfortunately, Cadbury is not one of his cat buddies.

Junior’s I-hate-most-cats-including-you expression.

I like the chain on this outfit. Gives the furry friend a very biker-ish look.

The dogs and cats were very tired and hot after the photoshoot, but all of them looked rather happy from the attention and probably also the opportunity to play dress up once in a while (vain).  There are loads more clothes to be displayed at the event on 26th June (5 more days!) but I chose only the ones I personally liked for the mascots to have fun with.

Sooo… I guess we shall see you there?
